Program Summary | Class Descriptions | Materials for 2010-11 Attendees

Our Management Academy consists of ten workshops that focus on public works and roads, but any municipal official can benefit from the management principles. Experienced leaders present dynamic topics in hands-on workshops designed to address key management and leadership principles necessary for managers, supervisors, and those aspiring to be leaders. View our brochure.

The Management Academy is open to the following municipal/state officials: road foremen/road commissioners, select board members, town managers, supervisors, administrative assistants, waste water operators and those who have completed roads scholar Level 1, or have 60 hours of training. Waste water operators may be eligible for recertification hours based on their level of certification.

Participants will be selected based on a one-page application and letter. The application letter should address career goals, expected contributions to the program, and why attending the Management Academy is important to you.

The 2010-11 Management Academy began in May. Vermont Local Roads has been pleased to welcome 17 individuals from 10 communities around Vermont into the fourth installment of the program.

What is expected of Program Participants?

  • Attend ten workshops; five in 2010, five in 2011.
  • Enrollment is endorsed by supervisor.
  • Participants agree to review the DVD of a missed workshop and submit a written summary at the following months workshop. DVD must be returned (due to copyright issues).
  • Read assignments in preparation for each workshop. They average about one hour per month.
  • By September 2010, participants will choose a project on which to give a ten minute presentation before the group in October 2011. We will work with you throughout this process.
  • Missing three of the ten workshops disqualifies a participant from graduating, although he/she may continue to attend the remaining workshops.

What is the cost?

The fee is $550 for the ten sessions and graduation ceremony. See payment options on application form.

Ten $100 scholarships are available from the Vermont Municipal Highway Association (VMHA) for member towns. These will be awarded upon completion of the program. See application form.

Graduates on the Academy:

"The variety of topics hit the nail on the head in terms of what I wanted to get from the Academy and met my needs as to the direction I’m heading in my career.  Every session I was amazed at the number of years of experience sitting right there in the room with me!  Every instructor was so willing to answer any question we had. I had an excellent time!”

Loren Ward, Town of Essex

I enjoyed all of the sessions, they were all done very well. There was much information that I found useful right away. Working with my classmates in the work sessions gave me different ways of looking at and dealing with issues that we all, as supervisors, have to deal with on a regular basis. Working on the project for the presentation shed light on some operations in my Town and gave me incentive to analyze some other operations in the same way. I recommend The Academy to any supervisors who haven’t yet attended. You will be glad that you signed up.”
